The idea behind a keyword pyramid is simple. The keyword pyramid consists of multiple levels of keywords, in a kind of tree structure. The image above is a schematic representation of a keyword pyramid. In principle, the levels of keywords correspond to the levels in your website. The golden rule in SEO is to offer relevance. The content of your page must correspond to the search words that someone has typed into a search engine .

Now take the list of keywords that you have made yourself, or perhaps received from your SEO consultant. And now think about the page structure  list to data  of your website. It will be clear: you cannot optimize all pages of your website for all keywords that ‘score high’. Every page in your website has its own purpose (or at least should have that), and you have to optimize all these pages separately for the right keywords. A keyword pyramid is the ideal tool for this.

How to make a keyword pyramid?

As mentioned, the structure of the keyword pyramid corresponds to the structure of your website. The first level of the pyramid consists of keywords that apply to the website as a whole. The next level consists of keywords that apply to the various main pages. These are often the pages in your main navigation. The subsequent levels are the keywords for the (sub)category pages and detail pages, for example pages for specific products and services.

Keyword Pyramid Level 1: The Home Page

Suppose you have a webshop where you sell wine. Keywords on the first level are for example ‘wine’, ‘buy wine online’, ‘wine webshop’. These are generic search terms. There is a high search volume on these keywords, but the competition is usually also high. It is tempting to invest a lot of time and energy to get your homepage in the first place in search results for these search terms. Visitors who search for generic terms are visitors who are in the orientation phase of a purchase. They choosing the right gambling database for your needs  may click further on your website, but they may not. The chance of conversion is not particularly high.
